Zurich, Switzerland - (June 12, 2008) – Stanford Financial Group (“Stanford”) announces the Sir Allen Stanford Pediatric Fellowship Program with Kinderspital Zurich - the University Children’s Hospital in Zurich. Stanford’s new program will provide financial support to Kinderspital Zurich for a fellowship scheme focused on pediatrics that is unique in Switzerland.
Starting in summer 2008 and running for 5 consecutive years, Stanford will fund three Fellowships each year, allowing these specialists to each spend a training year to deepen their knowledge in their respective fields. In addition to the Sir Allen Stanford Pediatric Fellowship Program, Stanford is funding additional brief study trips for individual doctors. The total amount of financial support provided by Stanford across both programs will amount to almost CHF 1 million over the 5 years.
Sir Allen Stanford has said “I believe that nothing strengthens a community more than healthy, happy children. Nothing.” Professor Hans Weder, President of the University of Zürich agrees and confirmed that “Generations of doctors will benefit directly or indirectly from the program and improve the wellbeing of countless children, young people and families. We are extremely grateful and excited about the opportunities that the Sir Allen Stanford Pediatric Fellowship program presents.”
Kinderspital Zurich is the largest clinic in Switzerland specializing in pediatric surgery and care and is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in Europe. Professor Felix Sennhauser M.D., Director University Children’s Hospital, said “Through the Sir Allen Stanford Pediatric Program, Stanford has for the first time made it possible for us to directly select fellows on tenure track positions in academic pediatrics and pediatric surgery and to reinforce the hospital as an international center of excellence today and for the future.”
The Sir Allen Stanford Pediatric Fellowship Program makes it possible for young clinicians and university doctors to undertake suitable residencies to help them progress in their chosen specialty. The level of research possible through this Stanford program will occur at a deeper and more significant level focused on specific pediatric issues. Patients will benefit from medical and surgical treatment at the highest standards of quality based on the latest scientific findings.
For 2008, the three Stanford fellowships will focus on:
1. Prediction of neurodevelopment outcome in very preterm infants using cerebral function monitoring. The results will enable physicians and therapists to optimize care for preterm babies and to individualize therapeutic options.
2. Developing an instrument to facilitate the identification and the assessment of patients requiring pediatric palliative care, those suffering from illnesses that have no cure. Such care is crucial to improve their quality of life.
3. Applying tissue engineering techniques in order to grow bladder tissue for functional replacement in children suffering mainly from congenital bladder malformations.
The Stanford Financial Group has a long-standing commitment to giving back in the communities where its companies are active. “Our relationship with Kinderspital Zurich continues the Stanford tradition of supporting meaningful philanthropy in the communities we serve. I am proud of our commitment and look forward to the significant advances that the Sir Allen Stanford Pediatric Fellowship Program will support”, said L. Jack Staley, President of Stanford Group (Suisse) AG, the Stanford company headquartered in Zurich.
